IMPACT

Disease outbreaks have both immediate and long-lasting impacts on communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us the consequences of limited public health infrastructure on a global scale. However, we see this as an opportunity to not only address existing gaps, but to empower  West Africa with state of the art technology, capacity, and infrastructure to leapfrog current disease surveillance approaches. Sentinel continues its impact on public health and outbreak response through technology development and implementation, including supporting key responses to COVID-19, Lassa fever and Mpox.

Since the program’s launch in the spring of 2020, Sentinel has made important progress implementing its framework and supporting local capacity for disease surveillance in West Africa. As we continue to drive forward our mission to share the future of disease prevention and pathogen surveillance, create the future of disease prevention and preemption, we hope to prevent the next  pandemic before it starts, reducing fear and panic, as well as save lives.

Training and Capacity Building

Sentinel has trained scientists from 53 different of the 54 countries in Africa which comprises a population of well over 1.28 billion people*. This training supports scientists and public health officials with the needed capacity for pathogen detection and the skills needed to perform local outbreak response.
