OUR WORK

Sentinel is an outbreak early warning framework focused on detecting viral threats in real-time and preparing the global community to stop diseases before they spread by partnering with local leaders in the communities we work with. To achieve this, Sentinel follows a three-pronged strategy, and a hub and spoke model for implementation: to DETECT circulating pathogens, CONNECT data and information systems, and EMPOWER scientists and public health officials in Africa to respond to and prevent pandemics.

Detect

Leveraging genomics-based surveillance tools to rapidly identify high-priority pathogens with:

  • CRISPR Based detection tools to quickly and accurately identify circulating pathogens, including viral, bacterial, and parasitic targets

  • Viral sequencing enabling a greater understanding of circulating pathogens and the opportunity to identify unknown and novel pathogens

Connect

Collecting and analyzing real-time surveillance data and providing it in an actionable form, allowing West African public health organizations to intervene quickly and precisely to prevent potential disease outbreaks with:

  • Data Capture and actionable insights: Gathering holistic clinical, lab and epidemiological data from clinics, laboratories, and citizens for a comprehensive picture of pathogen circulation.

  • Actionable insights: Providing real-time surveillance data in easily digestible visualizations to public health officials to aid in public health response.

Empower

Building and sustaining scientific capacity through hands-on training for scientists and public health professionals, and improving infrastructure to support sustainable scientific capacity by:

  • Training: Conducting hands-on genomics training for academic researchers and public health professionals

  • Infrastructure: Upgrading laboratory infrastructure and equipment

  • Engagement: Building partnerships across the public health system, at all levels
